What is Zero-Waste? Let’s ask Tippi Thole.
It means not sending anything to the landfill. There are many benefits to living a zero-waste lifestyle: saving money, eating healthier, reducing chemicals and becoming more self-sufficient. But the main reason to live a low waste lifestyle is for the environment. I believe zero-waste is a critical (and often overlooked) piece in a multi-pronged solution to climate change. People often feel powerless in the battle to slow global warming, but reducing waste is a simple way that individuals can make a big difference. And while we don’t live in a zero-waste world (yet), we can work toward achieving zero waste at home by following the 5Rs in this order:
Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rot (compost).
Tippi Thole is a Montreal resident that gained international recognition as an advocate for waste reduction. This is her model. She recently spoke in Bayfield to promote and encourage our participation. Students from South Huron DHS in Exeter have taken up the challenge and have had impact in their community in reducing single use plastic and waste in general.
